“Come back here now!” His angry voice yelled from behind me. Tears ran down my bruised face. I shook my head violently and slammed my eyes shut for a second. I could hear him getting closer. I couldn’t run very fast in these shoes. What had I done to deserve this?

Suddenly I was yanked to a painful halt. He had grabbed me by my ponytail. My feet still had momentum and flew from under me. My butt hit the wet cement ground. I yelped as he pulled me to my feet using my hair. Liquor was the heavy scent that attacked my nostrils. His brows were furrowed into that everlasting frown.

“I’m sorry Dad! Please don’t-“ He cut me off with a deafening loud smack. Pain rose on my face. I resisted the temptation of crying audibly. I was crying now but as long as I didn’t make any noises he wouldn’t notice.

“Where were you going?” He asked. He released my hair and I fell to the ground. “You know what tonight is. You aren’t allowed to leave the house.” I attempted to get up but he kicked me in the ribs. All air left my body and I couldn’t inhale. I wheezed and gasped for air as I writhed on the filthy ground. My ability to breathe slowly returned.

He grabbed my ankle and began to drag me back home. In my mind I screamed “No! No! No!” but I knew better than to say such a thing aloud. Let alone scream it.
